Queen Elizabeth's Well, Rye, East Sussex, 1911, TQ 9201 2096
This well was also simply known in recent times as Queen's Well. Prior to Elizabeht I's visit to Rye in 1573, to knight Thomas Walsingham III, when she drunk the water and met the town dignitaries, or Jurats, at this site before they processed into the town through a postern in the walls, this well was also known as Dodeswell (or Dowdeswell, dowde = plain woman, a scold or shrew) or Brekewell (Brickwell). It is currently in private hands, in the grounds of a substantial house.
